A 17-year-old learner driver arrested over an alleged hit-and-run in Darwin has been charged with driving unsupervised as well as under the influence of alcohol.
Northern Territory Police said a 40-year-old woman was found injured on the Stuart Highway near the intersection with Tivendale Road at Berrimah at around 7.45pm last night.
The woman was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
In a media release police said officers later located a 17-year-old boy at a home in Darwin's northern suburbs with the help of information from other drivers.
"Witnesses were able to provide police details of a vehicle of interest, which was later located at an address in Jingili," NT Police detective sergeant Corey Burton said.
"The vehicle had damage consistent with the crash and a 17-year-old learner driver was arrested at the scene."
The teenager was later charged with hit-and-run, driving unlicensed or uninsured, driving without a licensed passenger and being a learner driver with alcohol in blood.
He was granted bail to face court at a later date.
Craig Garraway from St John Ambulance earlier told ABC Radio Darwin that the woman suffered serious injuries to the lower half of her body.
"[The woman had] quite serious injuries there to her leg, to her hips," he said.
"It's about 90 kilometres an hour speed limit through there and quite dark."
