Authorities in Washington, D.C., have apprehended two teenage boys in connection with a violent attack and robbery that tragically led to the death of a well-known DJ and hairstylist, Bryan Smith.
Metropolitan police Chief Pamela Smith announced during a news conference that a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old were taken into custody on Thursday in relation to the incident. The identities of the suspects have not been disclosed.
Chief Smith expressed that while nothing can reverse the senseless loss, the arrests provide a semblance of justice and a step towards healing. She emphasized the city's commitment to pursuing and holding accountable those who perpetrate violence.
The incident occurred when the suspects allegedly attacked and robbed Smith, also known as 'The Barber,' as he was walking home after work in the early hours of October 27. Surveillance footage played a crucial role in identifying the perpetrators.
Smith was discovered severely injured and unconscious, having been robbed of his phone, wallet, and credit cards. Due to the absence of identification, his family reported him missing before he was identified later in the day. Tragically, Smith succumbed to his injuries after spending over a week in a coma.
The Northern Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an investigation to determine the cause and manner of Smith's death.
Smith's mother, Lela Sandoval, expressed her devastation over the loss of her son, highlighting the senselessness of the crime. She recounted the difficult decision to remove him from life support after complications arose.
Authorities suspect that the arrested teens may be involved in other robbery attempts and assaults that occurred on the same day as Smith's attack. The weapon used in the assault has not been recovered, but the investigation is ongoing.
The suspects currently face charges including robbery and assault with intent to commit robbery, with the possibility of additional charges related to Smith’s death. Chief Smith issued a stern warning to young individuals, emphasizing the consequences of engaging in violent behavior and endangering the community.
