Homicide squad detectives have launched an investigation after a 16-year-old boy was stabbed to death near a train station in Melbourne's west.

Police said officers were called to Station Place in Sunshine at about 3.45pm on Thursday after reports a male had been stabbed.

When officers arrived they found a 16-year-old boy from Melton South with injuries.

He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

Another 16-year-old boy, from Sunshine North, was taken to hospital with minor injuries, police said, adding that homicide squad detectives were investigating the death.

"Investigators are yet to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and the investigation is ongoing," police said in a statement.

Police have asked anyone who witnessed the incident or that had information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
