Teenage boy dies after incident at quarry

A 16-year-old boy has died after an incident at a quarry in Wigan. Emergency services received a report at around 9.40pm yesterday (July 9) that a boy had entered the water and got into difficulty at Dawber Delph, Appley Bridge.

Following a search, the boy was recovered from the water. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The boy's next of kin has been informed. His death is not being treated as suspicious by Lancashire Constabulary, reports Lancs Live.

A Lancashire Constabulary spokesperson said: "Emergency services attended the scene and following a search the body of a 16-year-old boy was recovered from the water. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be passed to the coroner in due course."

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 9.36pm on July 9 to Dawber Delph, Appley Bridge, to assist Lancashire police and North West Ambulance Service in the search for one person in the water. Three fire engines, a boat and the drone team were deployed.

"Tragically the casualty died at the scene. Our thoughts are with their loved ones."

The incident came as temperatures soared to the high-20s amid a heatwave in parts of the UK.
