A critical incident investigation is under way after police pepper sprayed a teenage motorbike rider who later crashed and had to be taken to hospital in critical condition.

Police stopped a motorbike on a footbridge off Gipps Street in West Tamworth, New South Wales, while patrolling around 3.50am on Friday.

The 18-year-old rider allegedly resisted arrest and police deployed OC spray, according to a NSW police statement. The rider then drove off and crashed into a parked car nearby, the statement said.

He was treated by NSW ambulance paramedics and was taken in critical condition to Tamworth hospital. He was later airlifted to John Hunter hospital for further treatment.

Police established a crime scene and a critical incident investigation team had commenced an investigation into the incident, which would be subject to an independent review, the police statement said.
