Teen Lanarkshire knifeman caught after posing with victim shortly before stabbing

A teenage Lanarkshire knifeman was caught because he’d posed for a photo with his victim shortly before the stabbing.

The victim’s friend and police officers tried desperately to stem the flow of blood from his neck wound.

Marc McGarry, now 20, of Bellshill Road, Motherwell, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court last week.

He admitted stabbing the victim, who was 19 at the time, in Bellshill Road, Motherwell, on October 9, 2021.

A 17-year-old male admitted punching a second male during the same incident.

The court heard the victims and three friends had been chatting to the two accused at a playpark in Fife Drive around 11pm.

One man recognised McGarry as they’d both attended New College Lanarkshire’s Motherwell campus.

John Coogan, prosecuting, said: “The accused stayed in the area for some time along with the witnesses. Photos were taken and they chatted.

“Shortly after midnight the two victims were heading home when they met the accused again.

“There was a verbal exchange and McGarry punched one man, knocking him to the ground.

“The man noticed that McGarry had a small knife combined with a bottle opener in his hand.

“McGarry’s friend punched the second victim then both accused walked away.

“One victim was unaware that he had been stabbed but began to cough up blood.

“Soon he was covered in blood. An ambulance was called and his friend applied pressure to his neck in an attempt to stem the blood.

“Police officers did the same when they arrived five minutes later.”

Doctors stitched the 2cm wound that was close to the jugular vein. Thankfully the stabbing victim made a full recovery though he has a scar.

The fiscal added: “He provided police with one of the photos taken earlier that allowed the accused to be identified.”

Neither McGarry nor the 17-year-old has previous convictions.

Sheriff Martin Jones deferred sentence on both until next month for reports.
