James Darren, known for his role as the charismatic beach boy Moondoggie in the hit film 'Gidget,' passed away at the age of 88 in his sleep at a Los Angeles hospital. His son confirmed the news, mentioning that Darren was too weak for an aortic valve replacement surgery. Darren, a versatile talent, not only acted but also found success as a television director, working on popular series like 'Beverly Hills 90210' and 'Melrose Place.'

In the late 1950s, Darren rose to fame as Moondoggie in 'Gidget,' alongside Sandra Dee. The film, based on a novel by Frederick Kohner, played a significant role in popularizing surfing culture, influencing music, slang, and fashion trends of the era.

His success with young fans led to a recording contract, resulting in several hit singles like 'Goodbye Cruel World' and 'Her Royal Majesty.' Darren was the only cast member to appear in all three 'Gidget' films, alongside actresses like Deborah Walley and Cindy Carol.

Despite his early success, Darren transitioned to television in the 1960s and 1970s, appearing in shows like 'The Time Tunnel' and 'T.J. Hooker.' He later found a passion for directing, working on popular series and eventually shifting his focus from acting to directing.

Born James Ercolani in 1936, Darren grew up in South Philadelphia with dreams of becoming a famous entertainer. His career took off after signing with Columbia Pictures, leading to a successful run in both film and television.

Throughout his life, Darren was married twice and had three sons. He also had connections in the entertainment industry, being the godfather of Nancy Sinatra's daughter A.J. Lambert.

James Darren's legacy as a teen idol and versatile entertainer will be remembered by fans and colleagues alike, marking a significant chapter in the history of Hollywood.
