Teen hospitalised during exams celebrates GCSE success

A teen who was admitted into hospital in the midst of exam season found out she had smashed her GCSEs today.

Bethany Stammers from Southport found herself in hospital ahead of her third round of exams as her eating disorder, along with the stress of exams, meant she was fatigued and unable to function. Following her second religious education exam, she went to a history revision session where she was unable to focus.

The decision was made for her to go into hospital while she recovered, with her school, Christ the King High School, contacting exam boards to ensure the 16-year-old wasn't penalised for her condition and time spent in hospital.

Bethany told the ECHO : "The eating disorder started during covid and came to a head in year 11 with exams but battled through. It was a tough decision to go into hospital.

"Every day was tough. There was a lot to deal with. I'm doing a lot better now though and I'm so happy with how I've done."

Bethany finished her GCSEs with six 9s, one 8 and one 7 thanks to the exam boards using the exams she had already sat, which was around two-thirds of them, to determine how she would have had she done all her exams.

Speaking to the ECHO, Erin Wheeler, headteacher at Christ the King, said she had "no words" to describe how proud she is of the students at the school, with the school seeing almost 30 more 9 grades than in 2019, the last examinations that weren't affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

She said: "The number of kids that got 7+ is incredible. The amount that they have been through with the pandemic and to come out doing so well is amazing. I really have no words to describe how proud I am."
