Teen arrested at Motherwell v St Mirren clash after 'throwing pyro on pitch'

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested by police at a weekend football match after a pyrotechnic was allegedly hurled onto the pitch.

Police at SMISA Stadium in Paisley moved in to detain the teenager after the firework was allegedly thrown from the crowd while St Mirren played Motherwell in their first SPFL match of the season. Officers have since confirmed that the youngster was removed from the stadium and arrested.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said that the behaviour of fans during the match was otherwise "a credit to themselves and their club". They did not say what action would be taken against the 15-year-old in relation to the allegations.

The spokesperson said: "A 15-year-old male was arrested in connection with throwing a pyrotechnic during the St Mirren v Motherwell football fixture on Sunday, 31 July, 2022.

“We work closely with both clubs during the planning process and on match days to address this kind of behaviour.

"We would like to thank the vast majority of fans for their conduct, they were a credit to themselves and their club.”

Motherwell won the game 1-0 after Kevin van Veen put one away shortly before half-time.

However, the win was sullied by Ricki Lamie's red card in the 82nd minute for his tackle on Keanu Baccus.
