Ted Karras couldn’t pass up opportunity with the Bengals in free agency

The Cincinnati Bengals landed a big prize in free agency with center Ted Karras, a standout who can play either guard or center.

Karras has made it sound like the decision to sign with the Bengals was an easy one, too.

Despite putting in work at both guard and center in spots like Miami and New England in recent years, which boosted his market in free agency quite a bit, Karras says going back to center was the smart play with the Bengals.

“Playing guard last year opened up the market for me, but this opportunity presented itself early in free agency and jumped on it,” Karras said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com.

Funnily enough, Karras could end up playing guard in Cincinnati, too, should injuries or simple struggles cause a shakeup along the line. His grading at guard was actually a little better than his marks at center in recent years.

That sort of versatility and effectiveness is why the Bengals went so hard after Karras in the first wave of free agency. Ditto for his character and leadership — something Bill Belichick mentioned often.
