Techniquest will be giving free tickets to children and families across South East Wales, to visit the science centre after receiving a funding boost.
The ScottishPower Foundation have awarded nineteen charities across England, Scotland and Wales a funding boost totalling almost £1.2 million. The funding will go towards projects that cover and raise awareness for a number of different issues, including the climate crisis and biodiversity.
Wales' largest science discovery centre, Techniquest in Cardiff Bay, is one of the charities receiving funding from the ScottishPower Foundation. Techniquest will provide free access to the centre, for 3000 people as well as tickets to view the Ocean Extravaganza project where they will learn about how to protect marine life from pollution as well as other under the sea topics. At the beginning of June, Techniquest will begin to email schools to apply for a free class visit, with the visit itself scheduled to take place in early Autumn.

The Ocean Extravaganza project will be developed at Techniquest and will be delivered by Techniquest’s Live Science Hosts at the Science Theatre in Techniquest. It will be available throughout the summer holidays for general public, if they choose to add it to their admission ticket for an extra £2 per person.
A spokesperson for Techniquest said: "The generous funding from the Scottish Power Foundation allows us to provide free tickets for 2,000 school children in total, so that they can both visit Techniquest and see a performance of the brand new Live Science Show, Ocean Extravaganza at the same time.
These tickets will be shared out via schools situated within our local catchment, in some of South East Wales’ most economically challenged areas. The Education Team at Techniquest will allocate those tickets during the summer term, to schools already known to them which fit the criteria of the funding bid."
In addition to this, the Scottish Power Foundation funding also allows us to reach out to an additional 1,000 people who would otherwise be unable to afford to visit Techniquest this summer. Following the May half-term holiday, our Education Team will be distributing these tickets directly to those who need a little extra help more than most in these difficult economic times.
The tickets will be processed primarily through a network of foodbanks and pantries in the local area: this will ensure the tickets reach those most in need who currently use these facilities and who are able to reach Techniquest easily on foot, by bike or on relatively inexpensive public transport."
