Team Tszyu spare no expense in title quest

Sparing no expense, Team Tszyu will shell out up to half a million dollars in pursuit of world title glory and Australian boxing immortality.

Tim Tszyu's showdown with American Jermell Charlo in Las Vegas in January for undisputed super-welterweight honours is the biggest overseas bout involving an Australian in decades.

The 28-year-old is bidding to become only the ninth boxer to unify a weight division in the 18-year four-belt era and claim the IBF, WBA, WBO and WBC straps.

No wonder why promoters No Limit Boxing are placing no limit on how much it will cost to relocate Tszyu to the US for a meticulous nine-week camp before the January 28 mega-fight at the MGM grand.

Tsyzu's manager Glen Jennings, uncle-trainer Igor Goloubev and trusted chef Omar will set up camp in Los Angeles for a month from late November before shifting to Vegas in early January.

Having his chef alone living with him for the duration will set back Team Tszyu north of $30,000.

That's small fry to the estimated $190,000 worth of flights firstly for Tszyu's tight-knit crew and then the expanding entourage including his "cut man" Mark Gambin and family members who will fly in a week before the flight.

Throw in $50,000 for Airbnbs in LA and Vegas, double that amount for hotels for the rest of the travelling crew and add around $40,000 for car hire and that's just the start.

"Yeah, it's not a cheap exercise. A lot of people overlook that but for us it's literally picking up everything we do here in Australia and transporting it halfway across the world," Jennings told AAP on Tuesday.

"When you get to this level, there's no shortcuts. You've got to do everything properly. It's a massive operation. I've been working on this for a couple of months.

"And the sad reality is you can't get too far ahead of yourself because nobody in boxing really picks up the gauntlet of these events until they get closer and every day that ticks by the airfares go up.

"Everything goes up, so your budget is always sliding in the wrong direction and there's always going to be unexpected expenses that you weren't ready for."

Other expenses Team Tszyu are ready for include daily massages and physio for 10 weeks ($7000) and sparring partners for two months ($48,000).

"That is the nature of the business and we're not going to take any shortcuts and there will be no excuses," Jennings said.

"Tim will have the best preparation that we can possibly give him and he will be ready and that costs money to do today."

No Limit Boxing's George Rose says the monster outlay is worth every cent, especially if he wins to emulate his legendary father and become a unified world champion.

"This is as big as it gets. There's nothing bigger than what Tim's about to fight for. So you've got to give everything you can," Rose told AAP.

"If there's ever a time to leave no stone unturned, it's when you're fighting for an undisputed world title."
