Team rescue effort after kitten gets stuck 60ft up huge tree

Firefighters, tree surgeons and RSPCA workers rescued a kitten who had got herself stuck 60ft up a huge tree in Oldham.

Nine-month-old Pixie had only been going outside for about five days before she became stranded in tree. She was spotted stuck 18 metres up a tree at a property in Hollinwood on February 19.

She evaded rescue attempts for three days, before she was eventually brought back down to earth in a tree surgeon's net. At first, concerned neighbours tried to reach her using a ladder, but she ended up climbing even higher.

The following day ,the RSPCA was called and animal rescue officer Lee Ferrans went to the scene. He contacted the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, but again Pixie climbed further up the tree.

"We left some food out for her on a branch overnight and I then returned the following day but it was pretty clear that after being up there at that height for about 72 hours", Lee said.

"Pixie still wasn’t going to budge, so I decided the next port of call would be to try and find a local tree surgeon."

Oldham-based firm Mad about Trees offered to help and arborist Stephen Jamieson and his two colleagues used specialist equipment to reach Pixie. She was brought back down to safety and reunited with her owner.

Lee added: "We’re really grateful to Mad about Trees who were only too happy to help with Pixie’s predicament and kindly offered their time and expertise free of charge. Our thanks also go to the fire service for their assistance in situations like this - their help and support is always very much appreciated.

"She took her time, but it was a great moment when we reunited Pixie with her owner. She’s certainly used up one of her nine lives and maybe this might have put her off scaling such a tall tree."
