A teal MP and her husband have apologised after he was caught on video removing a sign promoting her political opponent.

Peter Jordan, the spouse of Monique Ryan, federal member for Kooyong in Melbourne's inner east, backed down and apologised on Monday just hours after the footage of him was leaked.

"I unreservedly apologise for removing the sign," he said in a statement.

"It was a mistake. I believed the sign was illegally placed but I should have reported my concerns to council."

The footage appears to show Mr Jordan carrying a poster promoting Liberal candidate Amelia Hamer, taken in Camberwell on Saturday afternoon.

In the video, Mr Jordan, wearing a teal jumper, says the sign was put up illegally and repeatedly refuses to identify himself.

"I'm not saying who I am," he says in the video before a man tries to take the sign back from Mr Jordan, who warns, "if it goes back up, it'll be taken back down again."

Ms Ryan also apologised for the removal of the sign on Monday.

"It should not have happened," Ms Ryan said in a statement.

"All concerns around signage should be reported to council."

A Liberal Party spokesperson said the video was in direct opposition to what the teals presented themselves as.

"The teals preach integrity in public, but then behave like this when they think no one is looking," they said.

"Regretfully this is not the first time we've seen this sort of behaviour.

"It's disappointing that we now need to consider how to best keep our property and volunteers safe when Monique and her husband are around."

Camberwell is in the now marginal, but formerly blue-ribbon seat of Kooyong.

Ms Ryan won the seat in the 2022 election, unseating former Liberal deputy leader and treasurer Josh Frydenberg.

It marked the first time since Federation the seat has not been held by the Liberals or its predecessors.
