Teahupo'o surfing contest still waiting on swell

It was another lay day in Tahiti as Tyler Wright and her WSL competitors wait for bigger waves. (HANDOUT/World Surf League)

Surfing in the World Surf League's Tahiti Pro remains on hold for a third day with an improved swell still in the forecast for Teahupo'o.

The competition is up to the quarter-finals in the women's event and the elimination round for the men, with plans for the title to be decided by Thursday local time.

The forecast suggests conditions could match the 2014 contest at the break, when Kelly Slater downed Gabriel Medina in 12 to 15 foot barrelling waves, with the final widely considered one of the best in WSL history.

The two top-ranked men's surfers, Australia's Jack Robinson and world No.1 American Griffin Colapinto, are both in the sudden-death round.

Defending Teahupo'o champion Robinson takes on Brazilian Yago Dora while Colapinto meets Tahiti local trial's winner, Mihimana Braye.

Australian Olympians Molly Picklum and Tyler Wright both survived the elimination round at the famed break, which will host the Paris Olympics surfing tournament.

World No.3 Picklum will take on Tahiti's Vahine Fierro while two-time world champion Wright is up against another veteran in Tatiana Weston-Webb.
