TCC meets Don to hash out Saudi bid

Representatives of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) met with officials from the Foreign Affairs Ministry to discuss potential areas of cooperation with Saudi Arabia, following the normalisation of ties between the two kingdoms.

TCC Chairman Sanan Angubolkul, along with 26 senior figures from the business community, met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Don Pramudwinai on Tuesday to exchange their views on future cooperation with Riyadh, according to the Department of Information.

The meeting followed Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha's visit to Saudi Arabia on Jan 25, which resulted in the resumption of bilateral ties with Riyadh.

Participants discussed areas of cooperation with high economic potential, such as service and hospitality, tourism, energy, automotive, construction, education and the development of labour skills.

Also raised at the meeting was the possibility of Mr Don leading a Thai delegation comprising government and business representatives to Saudi Arabia at the earliest opportunity.

Earlier this week, the foreign affairs minister said the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, who is also deputy prime minister, would visit Thailand once the government finishes its roadmap to restarting bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Mr Don said all concerned stakeholders and related agencies would draw up a roadmap to ensure the agreements reached in Riyadh translate into action.

The minister said no date has been set for the crown prince's visit, as more time is needed to make all the preparations.

He and his Saudi counterpart have been in close discussion over the matter.

The minister has said cooperation in some sectors could begin in two months, but more complex agreements may take up to six months.
