Taylor Swift's Midnights - Album title explained as fans go wild for announcement

Taylor Swift is set to release her 10th studio album, Midnights, in October.

While receiving an award at MTV’s annual Video Music Awards, the 32-year-old musician used her acceptance speech to share her exciting update with the world.

As die-hard 'Swifties' will know, Taylor loves anniversaries and cryptic meanings - and many of her past music releases have been packed with Easter Eggs for fans to work out.

So what does Taylor's album title, Midnights, really mean?

According to the star, Midnights is based on "stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life."

Taylor added: "This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams.

"The floors we pace and the demons we face. For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching – hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes 12 … we’ll meet ourselves."

She shared the explanation on social media alongside the title and cover of the 13-track album.

It comes after Taylor surprised fans with her appearance at the VMAs on Sunday evening.

The star was up for five awards at the annual event and ended up going home with two - Best Longform Video and Video of the Year.

She dazzled in a jewelled Oscar de la Renta cutout dress and sent fans into a frenzy after announcing her new album is due out on October 21 during her Video of the Year acceptance speech.

Taylor told the audience: "You guys, I’m just so proud of what we made, and I know that every second of this moment that we wouldn’t have been able to make this short film if it weren’t for you, the fans.

"Because I wouldn’t be able to re-record my album [Red (Taylor’s Version)] if it weren’t for you. You emboldened me to do that.

"And I had sort of made up my mind that if you were going to be this generous and give us this, I thought it might be a fun moment to tell you that my brand new album comes out October 21st. And I will tell you more at midnight."

The recent album announcement comes almost a year after she released Red (Taylor's Version) in November 2021.

Red was originally released in 2012 and featured 16 tracks including her hit singles I Knew You Were Trouble, and We Are Never Getting Back Together.

The singer took the decision to remake her award-winning, million selling album after a row with Scooter Braun about the ownership of their master recordings.

The newly released album also featured 11 new songs.

At the time, she told fans on Twitter : "This will be the first time you hear all 30 songs that were meant to go on Red. And hey, one of them is even 10 minutes long."
