Taylor Hawkins dead: Foo Fighters drummer dies aged 50

Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins has died at the age of 50.

The band made the announcement on their social media pages on Friday.

A cause of death was not immediately clear.

A statement read: "The Foo Fighters family is devastated and by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins. His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with us all forever. Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the upmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time."

Local news reports say Taylor was found dead in a hotel room in Bogota, Colombia, where the group were set to play a festival.

They announced that they will not be performing at Festival Estéreo Picnic in the capital following the tragedy.

They had just completed a host of tour dates in South America.

Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Taylor relocated to Southern California with his family in his early childhood.

He was a touring drummer for Alanis Morissette and Sass Jordan in the 90s before joining the Foo Fighters in 1997 after the departure of original drummer William Goldsmith.

He took the role with the group after they completed their 1997 album The Colour and the Shape.

Taylor was one of the most-loved members of the Foo Fighters and over the years became one of the most recognisable faces in the band alongside frontman and his good friend, Dave Grohl.

The former Nirvana drummer had recruited the musician ahead of the Foo Fighters' meteoric rise from the alternative rock scene to being one of the biggest bands in the world, selling out arenas and stadiums across the globe.

In 2005 he was named Best Rock Drummer by magazine Rhythm.

Taylor also had a side project which he sang vocals for, Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders.
