"He has been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including possession of a firearm or imitation firearm and he remains in custody at this time," the statement read.
Dashcam footage emerged this week of a taxi driver who appeared to be holding a firearm and pointing it at his passenger.
A fonaCab spokesperson said they were aware of dashcam footage of an incident involving a fonaCAB driver.
"FonaCAB has been liaising with the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) Northern Ireland and the Police Service of Northern Ireland (P.S.N.I) regarding this.
"Due to the nature of the content of the footage, it would be inappropriate to make any further comment while investigations are undertaken," they added.
The firm have since revealed that the driver has been sacked.
A Northern Ireland Police Officer spokesperson added: "Enquiries are ongoing and detectives appeal to anyone with any information to contact Police on 101 or a report can be submitted online at www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/.
"Alternatively information can be given to the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at http://crimestoppers-uk.org/."
