Tavernier insists Rangers will come back stronger after Champions League humiliation

JAMES TAVERNIER insists Rangers will come back stronger from their Champions League humiliation after finishing pointless in Group A.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side claimed the unwanted honour of the worst-ever group stage outfit as they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Ajax at Ibrox.

Rangers failed to pick up a point in their six fixtures and scored only one other goal as they were outclassed by Liverpool and Napoli.

Tavernier gave Rangers hope late on as he converted from the penalty spot but the Dutch giants were well worthy of their win as they secured a Europa League berth with six points.

A series of defensive errors once again cost Rangers dear and Tavernier lamented the standard of the showings across the campaign after another sore night for the Light Blues.

Tavernier said: “It was obviously tough. We wanted to finish your final game, especially at home, with a positive result, but we couldn’t do that.

“It’s a learning curve and will have to take it in our stride. Going forward, we will learn from this and we can only come back stronger.

“It’s the finer details in these games when you are playing against this quality of opposition. If there’s a loose pass or you switch off for two seconds they can punish you.

“That’s the finer details you have to work on going forward. I’m sure we will do that. This squad is going to come back stronger and move forward.

“Yes [we switched off defensively]. And you get punished for it. But like I said, we will learn from this. It was a proud moment for all of us to come into this competition but we’ve not done ourselves justice.

“We’ve not given the fans what they wanted and will own up to that and only apologise. But its a learning curve. We have to be better especially in this competition.”
