Taste of success as Asian Tandoori in Cambuslang scoops first award

The owner of a popular Cambuslang takeaway has told of his surprise after his business won its first award.

Asian Tandoori scooped the Best Takeaway in Glasgow gong at the glittering Scottish Takeaway Awards on Monday.

The black-tie event took place at the Marriott Hotel in Glasgow, where all the top names from the industry gathered.

A delighted Adam Ahmed told Lanarkshire Live: “It was unexpected. We did know that we were finalists, but we had been before. There was no indication that we were going to win.

“I just went along on the day and when they announced it. My jaw dropped. I was so shocked but it was a good shock.

“I was really just there for the day to see what was happening, and then we won, and I had to go on stage and say a few words.

“The thing was it was during business hours, so the staff was working and couldn’t go.

“It’s a really big achievement because the award was for the best takeaways in Glasgow and there were a lot of big names. I really didn't think Asian Tandoori would win."

The takeaway offers a wide selection of Indian curries, burgers, pizzas and kebabs.

Adam went on: “We’ve had the business for almost 13 years now. I’ve been in the food game for a long time, I was in project management and then the opportunity to open the takeaway came up.

“We’ve got 18 people including our delivery drivers and counter staff.

“I think the award speaks for itself, it’s better hearing it coming from the people who vote for us. I always say that the customers are the best judges.

“Now that we’ve one a title, there’s many more to go. We would love to continue on the path we’re going on and have more achievements. Our main target is to look after the people then they look after us."

He added: “It’s always nice to speak to the customers for a bit of banter. Sometimes I feel like it's more a therapy shop than a kebab shop.

“I want to say a big thanks to all our customers and staff. A huge thank you to our head chief Jameel Ahmed and to our guys out the front. Without these guys, we couldn't manage it.”

A spokesperson for the Scottish Takeaway Awards said: “Although in our second year, we are honoured by the fantastic response we have had from the public who were so keen to vote for their favourite takeaways.

“This industry has grown massively over the past years, and we aimed to seek out, reward and thank those who have managed to make a real difference by serving fantastic food, using the best of ingredients.

“The winners are an outstanding example of excellence whose dedication to be the best has made them stand out among the rest.”
