Tasmanian driver has lucky escape after wood flies from log truck into windscreen

A driver has narrowly avoided serious injury when a stray chunk of wood from a passing log truck smashed through their windscreen on a road in Tasmania's north.

Police said the driver of the SUV was "understandably shaken" by the incident, which happened at 2:30pm on Wednesday at Pipers River, north of Launceston.

The car was travelling eastbound on Bridport Road when a piece of wood fell from a log truck travelling in the opposite direction.

Police said they were yet to identify the truck or truck driver, and called for anyone who witnessed the incident or had dashcam footage to contact them.

"It's incredibly lucky no-one was injured," Tasmania Police said in a Facebook post.

"This is a solemn reminder of the need for all motorists to ensure their load is secured before travelling on our roads."

One commenter on Facebook said a similar incident had happened to them.

"This has happened to me before, but luckily the wood hit my windscreen horizontally. I still think about it all the time, though," they said.
