Tasmania Police's professional standards body will lead an investigation into the death of a person whose body was found in a vehicle following a police pursuit on Monday.
Police believe the deceased is the man wanted over the alleged shooting of two police vehicles a fortnight ago, 33-year-old Brighton man Robert Greig.
Police set up road spikes on Monday at the intersection of Nugent and Kellevie Road after a member of the public reported seeing Mr Greig's Holden Colorado on the Arthur Highway in the state's south-east.
At a media conference on Tuesday, police said the vehicle's driver was able to avoid the spikes.
Acting Deputy Commissioner Adrian Bodnar said officers pursuing the vehicle in a helicopter watched as the vehicle travelled north along Nugent Road, veered into bushland and later caught fire.
"Due to the rough terrain, police arrived on the ground about 15 minutes later and confirmed the body of a single deceased occupant was located inside the vehicle," Acting Deputy Commissioner Bodnar said.
Mr Bodnar said it would take several days to formally identify the body and that the Professional Standards Command would lead the investigation.
"That's on the basis that at the time of the circumstances we were actively working to apprehend Mr Greig," he said.
He added that although the severely burned body would have to be identified through dental records or DNA, police "strongly believe" it was Mr Greig.
Police named Mr Greig as a person of interest in relation to shots being fired at officers who were attending a call-out near New Norfolk, north of Hobart, late on September 26.
At the time, they said shots were fired at two police vehicles as they responded to an alleged family violence incident.
No one was injured in the incident but the police union said up to six shots had been fired, narrowly missing officers and damaging windows on a police car.
Police had been pleading with Mr Greig to "make contact with police and hand himself in".
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
