A man is set to stand trial over the alleged Christmas Day stabbing murder of Hobart midwife Rachel Wake.

Ms Wake, 52 and a mother of two, died in hospital on December 25 last year after the alleged stabbing in the suburb of Mornington.

Darren Mark Wake appeared via video link in Hobart Magistrates Court on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to one count of murder.

He will next appear in the Supreme Court of Tasmania on January 30.

More than $100,000 was raised for Ms Wake's children via an online fundraising page set up by one of her colleagues.

She was described as a popular and caring midwife and a loyal friend to many.
