Taron Egerton announces social media break after feeling ‘removed’ from himself

Taron Egerton has announced he is taking a break from social media for the rest of the year in a bid to “break away from a cycle” that he has become “addicted” to.

The Kingsman actor took to Instagram on Thursday to share that he would be going silent online to try and be more “present” with himself as well as those he loves.

He wrote: “I’m going to take a break from social media for a while.

“I’m not sure why I’m making a big declaration about it; I just think it’s hard to break away from a cycle that I’ve grown to find a bit addictive and this is me making a commitment to myself.

“I’ve gotten myself into a place where I spend too much time scrolling and I actually feel like my ability to sit and be present and read books and watch movies and even seek out the company of people I love is eroding as a result.”

The Welsh star said he hopes his time away from digital platforms will help him be more present (Instagram/Taron Edgerton)

The Welsh star continued: “I feel a bit removed from myself.

“And with regards to work, I know I am capable of more and IG is one of several impediments to getting there.

“Thanks everyone for saying such nice things all the time; I so appreciate it but I just need to not read the thoughts of strangers for a while; I’m not really sure this stuff is very good for any of us.”

Alongside his statement, Egerton captioned the post: “Have a great rest of your year everyone.

“And if you’re anything like me remember to leave your f***ing phone in the other room a bit more often. Love, T x”.

After sharing his sentiments, the Tetris star was inundated with messages from friends wishing him the best.

One wrote: “Good for you for knowing this, as a young person to be aware is refreshing to see!!”

“Taron thank you so much for being you, you are a huge inspiration to many of us and I really wish you well,” another shared.

A third commented: “I’ll try and take a lead from this and put my phone away a bit more often!

“Thanks for the reminder that the real life only happens when we engage in it in reality, rather than on the screen!”

The 33-year-old’s post comes after he watched Sir Elton John’s headline slot at Glastonbury on Sunday.

The British star has become firm friend’s with the music icon after portraying him in 2019 biopic Rocketman about Sir Elton.

Egerton’s performance won him a Golden Globe and a Bafta nomination.

Egerton is not the only UK star to sign off social media as Tom Holland announced last August that he was quitting digital platforms for his mental health.
