Target Recalls 5 Million Popular Items for Terrifying Reason

Target (TGT) is recalling nearly 5 million candles following reports of severe burns and lacerations, safety regulators said.

The recall involves 4.9 million Threshold Glass Jar 5.5 ounce 1-Wick, 14 ounce 3-Wick and 20 ounce 3-Wick Candles in multiple scents, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled candles and return them to any Target store for a full refund or contact Target to receive a prepaid return label to return the candles by mail, the commission said.

The candle’s jar can crack or break during use, posing laceration and burn hazards.

Target received 137 reports of the candle jar breaking or cracking during use. Six injuries were reported, including lacerations and severe burns.

The candles were made in Vietnam and sold at stores nationwide and online between August 2019 and March 2023 for $3 to $20.

The recalled item numbers are printed on the bottom of the glass jars. The full list of recalled candles is available on Target's website.

Target said in a statement that it is “committed to providing high quality and safe products to our guests. Target recalled certain Threshold candles due to potential safety concerns identified in the CPSC press release.”

Separately, Target recently warned that a surge in theft from its U.S. stores would likely cost $500 million more than it did last year.

"While there are many potential sources of inventory shrink, theft and organized retail crime are increasingly important drivers of the issue," CEO Brian Cornell said as the company released better-than-expected first-quarter earnings results.

"We are making significant investments in strategies to prevent this from happening in our stores and protect our guests and our team."
