'Tardis like' Lark Lane café bar serving 'beautiful and reasonably priced' breakfasts

A Lark Lane bar and café is serving up delicious breakfasts in a retro and tranquil space.

Rhubarb, located on the quirky and bustling Lane, is a beautiful venue with eclectic and vintage-inspired décor, and a decent menu of homemade favourites. Outside, there's a brightly coloured green and white striped awning that wouldn't be out of place on the streets of many warmer European cities, with little tables where patrons can sit and watch the world go by.

Inside, there's retro dark wood panelling wrapping around the lower half of the walls, with a soothing blue paint above on some sides, and floral wallpaper on others. There's wooden tables with trendy marble worktops, and sumptuous booth seating in a vibrant orange hue.

Menus are kept in an old-fashioned briefcase on the bar, while a range of artwork adorns the walls, all adding to the other-worldly feel of the place. It's quite a small space but it stretches far back in an almost tardis-like manner, keeping the hustle and bustle of Lark Lane at bay and allowing visitors to focus entirely on the food.

Rhubarb's menu offers all day breakfast staples like a Full English, Eggs Benedict, American pancakes and more, while its lunch menu features decadent baguettes, wraps, sandwiches, soups and salads. I opted for the very reasonably priced Eggs Florentine, which is the vegetarian version of the traditional Benedict dish.

Rhubarb is based on Lark Lane (Jess Flaherty/Liverpool ECHO)

For £6.95, it included two poached eggs on top of a toasted English muffin, with wilted spinach, mushrooms and lashings of hollandaise sauce, while my friend stuck with the traditional option. The food was well presented and arrived promptly, with perfectly poached eggs that oozed satisfyingly as soon as they were eagerly prodded by my knife.

The English muffin was soft and sweet, while the mushrooms were very well cooked and seasoned, managing to avoid the rubbery consistency that ensured I swerved them until reaching adulthood. The only downfall to an otherwise perfect breakfast was the overly generous serving of sauce.

If you're a big fan of excessive amounts of sauce then this will be of no concern to you, but for me, it overwhelmed the other flavours. My friend channelled her inner Sally Albright (where are my 'When Harry Met Sally' fans at?) and asked for her hollandaise sauce on the side which I'll definitely be doing next time.

I'd recommend popping into Rhubarb if you're in the mood for beautifully cooked food at a reasonable price in a gorgeous - and peaceful - setting. Rhubarb is located at 27 Lark Lane, Liverpool, L17 8UW.
