Taoiseach's partner apologises for 'any offence caused' over coronation remarks

The Taoiseach's partner Matthew Barrett has apologised over a series of posts he made mocking King Charles' coronation.

The cardiologist came under fire after posting several jokes about the coronation on his private Instagram account. The posts were published hours after Dr Barrett met the King of England along with Mr Varadkar at a reception in Buckingham Palace.

One of the alleged posts included a photo taken by Dr Barrett inside the Taoiseach's VIP vehicle, jokingly captioned with "Holy sh*t I think I’m accidentally crowned king of England." Mr Varadkar admitted in a press conference today in Limerick that the remarks on his partner's Instagram account were irreverent.

Dr Barrett wrote on Twitter earlier today: "On reflection, poor judgement on my part. Unreservedly I apologise for any offence caused."

The Instagram account was accessible to his 350 followers. Mr Varadkar did not specify in today's press conference whether his partner should apologise, the Irish Mirror reports.

The recent statement made by Dr Barrett divided audiences on Twitter. Some people criticised the multiple posts made, while others acknowledged that the comments were light-hearted in nature.

One person wrote: "You knew exactly what you were doing. One post may have been seen as poor judgement but there were several posts."

Another Twitter user added: "Don't know you but I like your sense of humour. I'd be the exact same. You were saying stuff any of us would say."
