Taoiseach Micheal Martin gets frosty reception from one resident of Downing Street

Taoiseach Micheal Martin travelled to the UK over the weekend to meet the newly appointed Prime Minister Liz Truss and attend Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

However, after making his way to 10 Downing Street on Sunday, the Taoiseach received a rather frosty reception from one resident.

Mr Martin offered his condolences to the British people on the loss of their longest-serving monarch during the 45-minute meeting.

But it was after he encountered Number 10's resident pet, Larry the cat, that got everyone talking.

Footage of the Taoiseach leaving the infamous location shows him stooping down to greet the fluffy white and grey cat with a pet of affection on the steps.

However, things didn't go to plan as Larry darted away, leaving Mr Martin somewhat embarrassed.

The Taoiseach was joined by President Michael D. Higgins that evening as the pair and their wives, Sabina and Mary, attended the lying in state of the Queen.

Both were hosted at Buckingham Palace by King Charles III at a reception for world leaders after flying in for the solemn State funeral of her majesty.

The President's attendance at Westminster Hall comes after the Queen hosted him on his first-ever Irish State visit to the United Kingdom in 2014.

The four-day visit saw the Queen host a white-tie banquet at Windsor Castle, where the monarch was laid to rest in St George's Chapel, alongside her late husband, Prince Philip.

It was highly unusual that the President and the Taoiseach were both absent from Ireland at the same time to attend the event.

But due to Ireland's close ties with the UK, a full formal attendance was deemed appropriate.

Later this week, the Taoiseach will fly to New York on a two-day visit for the United Nations General Assembly.
