Taoiseach Micheal Martin dismisses rumours of row between three coalition parties

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has dismissed suggestions that there are rows in the coalition between Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Green Party.

This is despite several reports of arguments among the three Government parties in the last number of days.

The Irish Examiner reported that Mr Martin accused Fine Gael and the Green Party of playing “bad politics” at a Fianna Fáil parliamentary party meeting over their ongoing criticism of ministers.

It was also reported that Tánaiste Leo Varadkar publicly rebuked Fianna Fáil TD James Lawless in the Oireachtas restaurant last week.

However, the Taoiseach downplayed suggestions of any rifts in the coalition and denied that he had accused his Government partners of bad politics.

“The relationship is very positive,” he said.

“No, I did not [accuse Fine Gael and the Green Party of bad politics].

“Can I calm you all down?

“The relationships are good between the three party leaders.

“It's a three-party coalition Government. Each party has come to the table with distinct priorities and distinct agendas.

“I think it's quite remarkable how resilient and strong the Government has been with three parties in it.

“The relationships are good. I want to stress that,

“In respect of some reports, there was no rebuking going on. I think that contextually, the remarks are taken out of context.

“Any team that goes out into pitch you play as a team. There is enough with the opposition having a go at us.”

Mr Martin would also not confirm reports that the transition of the Taoiseach’s office back to Mr Varadkar would be delayed by several days.

There is a European Council meeting scheduled for December 15, the same day as the reshuffle. It has been suggested that Mr Martin would go and the reshuffle would be pushed back until December 17.

The Taoiseach said that the Government was “on target for a December changeover” and that the discussions will take place at the end of November.
