“I just wanted to pay tribute to Ryan Tubridy for 14 years of service as presenter of the Late Late Show,” he told reporters.

“I know he's not retiring. He's gonna continue to do his radio show and I'm sure the show will continue as well.

“But I think the Late Late Show was more than just a talk show. It also performed an important public service role as well, particularly during the pandemic, when it was a very useful means to get information to people.

“I think the Toy Show as well, the way that's evolved, has been significant too and now raises a lot of money for charity for very good causes.

“I really just wanted to recognize that very considerable contribution to broadcasting

“The Late Late Show has always been much more than a talk show. It's been part of our culture and an important public service.”

When asked by the Irish Mirror who he was backing to replace Ryan, Mr Varadkar jokingly asked who the candidates were.

He later added: “It is definitely not for today. Today is Ryan’s day and I think we should pay tribute to him.

“I’m sure there will be great speculation about that in the next couple of days.”

Mr Varadkar also declined to comment on whether he wanted to see a woman take over the role.

Tánaiste Micheál Martin also paid tribute to Ryan, tweeted: “Thanking you Ryan for an incredible 14 years on the @RTELateLateShow

“You leave many lasting memories, from your brilliant Toy Shows, to your leadership during COVID, and contribution to the national debate.”
