Tanaiste confirms Budget 2023 measures just weeks away and will benefit millions

Leo Varadkar has confirmed that next week’s budget will feature a multi-billion euro package aimed at helping the people of Ireland cope with the rising cost of living.

The Tanaiste suggested that those struggling will see more money “in their pockets and off their bills within weeks.”

A number of benefits are due to be rolled out ahead of the Christmas season - a time when many feel the height of financial pressure - while more will be seen in the new year.

Aside from the immediate concerns raised by the current crisis, Mr. Varadkar also suggested that changes will be made to childcare, healthcare, public transport, and rent prices - to put us on par with other European countries, according to the Irish Times.

In terms of reducing transports fares by 20 or 30 percent, he said: “We’ll give consideration to extending that and maybe even improving on that in the context of the budget next week.”

The government has managed to extend free GP care to anyone ages six and under, as well as people who are living with terminal conditions and to those in receipt of the carers’ allowance, however, it has met some roadblocks in discussions with doctors and the IMO over the potential of widening eligibility.

In terms of rent, Sinn Féin finance spokesman Pearse Doherty called for tax credits for renters to put a month’s rent back in their pockets as well as the need for a freeze on rent increases.

He cited the fact that many younger generations will never be able to afford their dream home while paying sky-high rent each month.

Confirmation on actions taken on rent will come in next week’s budget, however, the Tanaiste agreed that rents were higher here than in other EU states and said it was a matter being discussed.

All will be revealed on Tuesday, September 27 when the Minister for Finance will present the official Budget Statement to Dáil Éireann.
