Tammy Abraham discusses Chelsea summer buy back clause as Graham Potter searches for striker

Roma striker Tammy Abraham has refused to dismiss a return to Chelsea. The 25-year-old said you should "never say never" when discussing a potential Stamford bridge reunion, adding he is "motivated" by transfer speculation.

Since departing west London for the Serie A outfit in 2021, Abraham has bagged 34 for Jose Mourinho's Roma side, nine of which came on the way to the Italian's Europa Conference League triumph last season. Meanwhile, Chelsea have struggled to void the attacking void in his absence, with both Romelu Lukaku and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang having failed to live up to the billing.

Before moving overseas, Abraham came through the Blues' youth ranks and scored 30 goals in 82 appearances after being thrust into the first team under Frank Lampard. Once Thomas Tuchel arrived in west London, Abraham soon fell out of favour, and his departure quickly became inevitable.

Now Graham Potter is in charge though, a move back to Chelsea could prove more likely as the former Brighton boss continues to look for a solution to the side's goalscoring issues this campaign. Any willingness to do a deal on Chelsea's side could be helped by the club having a buy-back clause of €80million (£70.3million) which comes into effect this July, as Fabrizio Romano reports.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, Abraham admitted there is a possibility he could pitch up at Stamford Bridge again in the future. “Would I go back there? In football you can never say never,” he said. “Right now, my focus is here at Roma - we want to finish the season strongly.

"I haven’t started thinking about anything yet, apart from being here and doing my best. I wouldn’t say there’s unfinished business in England – I’m in no rush. Football has no location, it could be anywhere. Maybe I stay at Roma for the next decade, maybe I don’t. You never know what’s around the corner.”

Last summer, after an impressive first campaign at Roma, the striker was continuously linked with a move back to the Premier League. Although he has suffered a slight dip in form this term, the rumours are still there, with the England international revealing he is actually motivated by the links rather than finding it distracting.

“It’s never annoying – as a player, to hear that teams want you is always motivating,” he added. “It means that you’re clearly doing something right and you have interest around the world. You use that as motivation, instead of finding it annoying. It’s nice to know that teams are interested in me.”

It's no secret Todd Boehly and Co. are in the market for a new striker this summer. Napoli's Victor Osimhen is said to be their first-choice target to enter next campaign, while Harry Kane has also been touted as an option.

However, Abraham would likely represent a cheaper alternative for the Blues if they believe his attributes could sufficiently contribute to Potter's new-look side next season.
