After a tumultuous few days of U-turns and press briefings, pressure is growing for Liz Truss to step down as Prime Minister.
MP for Reigate, Crispin Blunt became the first Tory MP to call for Liz Truss to resign amid mounting unrest within the party.
Speaking on Channel 4 on Sunday, October 16, Blunt said: “I think the game is up and it’s now a question as to how the succession is managed.”
Since then, several other MPs have followed suit. Andrew Bridgen, Jamie Wallis, Angela Richardson, and Sir Charles Walker have all since spoken on various media outlets calling for Ms Truss to go.
The PM’s official spokesman, however, insisted that no cabinet members have urged her to quit. The spokesman said: “Her [Prime Minister] view is she needs to be focused on what is right for the country rather than on any internal discussions among the party at the moment.
“She is conscious that these are globally difficult times, and the UK is in a difficult situation economically.
“That is why she has acted decisively and that’s why her focus will be on measures for (October) the 31st and also on wider areas of national concern, such as war in Europe.”
The several MPs openly calling for Truss to step down are certainly not alone. Results from a snap poll of Tory Party members released on Tuesday saw more than half respond that she should resign and 83 per cent say that she was doing a bad job.
