This year’s International Women’s Day falls at a challenging time for many, as the ongoing crisis in Ukraine continues to hold people’s attention and focus our minds on just how fragile our state of affairs can be.
However, the ongoing war can remind us of the reason to celebrate what we have, and no better day to sing the praises of a woman you admire or someone in your life who deserves a shoutout.
The Standard has already compiled a list of 22 Londoners deserving some recognition on IWD, including founder of the UK’s first non-male music festival Kitty Bartlett and founder of reproductive empowerment platform Hertility Health, Dr Helen O’Neill.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has also announced a “world-leading” policy to help staff going through the menopause on Tuesday, saying: “I am a proud feminist and strongly believe that women of all ages deserve to feel welcomed and accepted at work. This is why I am pleased to announce that City Hall is leading the way with our progressive menopause policy.
And on a lighter note, Transport for London launched a reimagined Tube map with the names of stations replaced by trailblazing women such as Florence Nightingale and Emmeline Pankhurst.
Are there any women you would like to celebrate today in particular? Tell us in the comments below for the chance to be featured on the ES website tomorrow.
