Talking Point: What should be Liz Truss’s top priority as PM?

Liz Truss has formally been made Prime Minister

Liz Truss promised to “deliver, deliver, deliver” as she was announced as the new leader of the Conservative Party, prior to formally taking over as Prime Minister today. And with what’s been described as the ‘in-tray from hell’, there’s plenty to work through.

“My friends, we need to show that we will deliver over the next two years,” she stated.

“I will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy. I will deliver on the energy crisis, dealing with people’s energy bills, but also dealing with the long term issues we have on energy supply. And I will deliver on the National Health Service.”

As well as taking on her new role as Prime Minister, she must assemble a team around her to help deliver (deliver deliver) on her promises. It’s been two months since Boris Johnson’s Cabinet came apart at the seams prompting his resignation. That was itself a Government formed amid the fractions in the party over ‘getting Brexit done’.

Former chief whip Mark Harper, a Rishi Sunak ally, said after a “bruising” summer that the party needs its leader to restore unity.

“The big question is about how to bring the party together. The best way of doing it – and it’s a sign of strength actually – is for the winner of the contest to appoint people to their Cabinet from across the party, not just people who supported them, but people from all wings of the party,” Harper told Sky News.

Truss appeared to concur, saying in her victory speech: “I will make sure that we use all the fantastic talents of the Conservative Party, our brilliant Members of Parliament, our peers, our fantastic councillors, our MS, our MSPs, all of our councillors and activists and members right across our country.”

With such a big job at hand, there’s no time to waste for Lizzie to get busy.
