Among a flurry of Cabinet changes made by new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the return of Suella Braverman to the Home Office just six days after she admitted a serious security breach has received the most criticism.
Just six weeks after originally being appointed Home Secretary by Liz Truss, Braverman resigned from the post after she admitted using her personal email to share government documents – only to be reinstated by Sunak.
Writing for the Standard, Ayesha Hazarika shared her “disbelief” at the news: “You cannot declare professionalism and integrity and bring back Braverman.”
Labour has written to Cabinet Secretary Simon Case urging for an investigation to take place as well as being granted an urgent question in the Commons to ask for the Home Secretary to make a statement on her resignation and reappointment.
Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper criticised Braverman for not responding in person: “My question was about security breaches and the protection of our national security. They are questions to the home secretary, who was here five minutes ago, but who left.”
The Prime Minister defended Braverman, saying she “made an error of judgement” and she “accepted her mistake”.
