The news that Extinction Rebellion is planning to recommence daily protests in the capital is unlikely to be welcome by anyone who has to commute through central London, although it’s unclear as of yet what sort of shape the demonstrations will take. In an online briefing, spokesman Andrew Smith said: “we won’t have pink boats, we won’t have pink tables, we will just have people power.
Mr Smith added: “In the tradition of non-violent civil disobedience, we will disrupt business as usual until the Government and big business make change. We need everyone to join us.”
Mr Smith said the group wanted April’s demonstrations to “feel and look very different from previous rebellions”. XR’s previous demonstrations have included blocking public transport systems in the capital, provoking frustration among commuters.
Last September, the Met Police made 508 arrests following two weeks of protests in London.
The news comes on the same day that Stop Oil protested at a number of oil refineries around the UK, in a similar fashion to how Extinction Rebellion and Insulate Britain have done so in the past. Police have made at least 13 arrests due to the demonstrations, with a number of major oil terminals having to suspend operations on Friday morning.
