GPs are to trial prescriptions for walking and cycling to improve mental and physical health.

The pilot schemes will run in 11 areas, offering adult cycle training, free bike loans and walking groups. Wheelchair and mobility scooter users will also be offered services.

The Department for Transport is funding the trials at a cost of £12.7 million.

Walking and Cycling Minister, Trudy Harrison, said the activities have “enormous positive impact on physical and mental health” and “will get people across the country moving and ease the burden on our NHS.”

Paul Farmer, chief executive at mental health charity Mind, welcomed the initiative as one of the ways GPs can support patients with their mental health.

However, while physical activity can benefit mental wellbeing, he cautioned: “People with mental health problems are all different, and what helps one person won’t necessarily work for another.”
