Talk of being 'most wanted' led to arrest of escaped prisoner

Careless talk in a taxi cost an escaped prisoner his liberty. Convicted burglar Shawn Dibble walked out of HMP Leyhill with another inmate, Bristol Crown Court heard.

But when Dibble was in a taxi, again with another man, one of them bragged Dibble was on Avon and Somerset Constabulary's Most Wanted list. After dropping Dibble off the taxi driver reported his whereabouts to police, who called on Dibble and arrested him.

Dibble, 44, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to escape from custody in June. Judge Michael Cullum jailed him for another 18 months.

The judge told DIbble: "What you did was seriously aggravated by elderly escape convictions. One was in April 2021 and another was in September 2003."

Robert Yates, prosecuting, said Dibble and another inmate left the open prison grounds through a hedge at 7.45pm on June 12. Mr Yates said Dibble was picked up by a vehicle.

Eight days later a taxi driver ferrying Dibble overheard he was on the police Most Wanted list. After the taxi driver confirmed it was true he contacted police, gave them the address where he dropped Dibble off and police arrested him.

The court heard Dibble had 45 previous convictions for 135 offences. Two of those included escape from custody.

Catherine Spedding, defending, said her client had served custody through lockdown before being transferred to HMP Leyhill and making the "foolish" decision to walk out. Miss Spedding said he was part-motivated to leave custody as he had not been getting anti-anxiety medication in custody.
