Takeaways and observations from Day 1 of Eagles’ mandatory minicamp

After nine weeks of offseason workouts and six OTA sessions, the Eagles hit the practice field at the NovaCare Complex for the first three-day, mandatory minicamp since the 2019 season.

It’s the first minicamp of the post-Jason Kelce, Fletcher Cox era, and it featured new faces and players evolving as new leaders. James Bradberry returned to the field after missing all OTAs, while Pro Bowl left guard Landon Dickerson was absent.

Tuesday was the first official day for Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio to build depth charts for their versatile and explosive units.

With Day 2 scheduled for Wednesday, here are takeaways and observations from the practice.

WR 3

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Parris Campbell (1) rushes the ball after making a long reception Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023, during a game against the Houston Texans at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Parris Campbell had his most productive seasons playing under Nick Sirianni in Indianapolis, and it appears the former Ohio State pass catcher has the early inside track to the third wide receiver spot behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

James Bradberry was in attendance and was expected to see snaps at the safety spot before exiting with an injury. Darius Slay, Kelee Ringo, and Avonte Maddox were the three cornerbacks. After manning the top spot during OTAs, Isaiah Rodgers ran with the second team, along with Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.

The Big Ticket

With Landon Dickerson out to an excused absence, former Jets offensive tackle Mekhi Becton was the left guard running with the Eagle’s first-team offense. Lane Johnson confirmed earlier in the day that Becton would get snaps at guard, and the massive offensive linemen did just that and looked athletic in the process.

Updated culture

The Eagles have always had a solid culture. Still, after going light the past three seasons and collapsing late last season, Philadelphia is holding its first mandatory minicamp during Sirianni’s four-year tenure, and it’s the first since 2019 when Doug Pederson was the head coach. The new defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio, voiced his opinion on the light practice load and said that the Eagles will work more this offseason and in training camp.

Starting defense

Brandon Graham and Fletcher Cox would be out of the starting lineup if the season started today. Graham will play his final season while Cox is officially retired. It’s a solid lineup with Jalen Carter entering his second season and Bryce Huff beginning the first of a lucrative three-year deal. There are concerns at linebacker and defensive tackle, where Jordan Davis will enter a critical third season. The secondary, as it stands, is solid, but at some point, you’ll see two names added to the rotation in Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. Even if both players aren’t starters, they’ll see key snaps.

Creativity

Kellen Moore is here, and on Tuesday, the Eagles continued implementing more motion and zip movement in their offense. This year’s priority will be to keep defenses guessing while moving A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith around in the offense.

Kelee Ringo

The former Georgia cornerback missed some OTA sessions but was the starting cornerback opposite Darius Slay on Day 1, not Isaiah Rodgers, Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, or James Bradberry. Ringo had a strong day and will surely battle Mitchell for that starting spot.

While some teams in the NFC East were missing multiple star players, the Eagles had just one player missing, Landon Dickerson, whose absence was excused.
