Takeaways and kebab shops forced to close at 10pm under new coronavirus measures

Takeaways must close at 10pm from Thursday for walk-in customers in a bid to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

From Thursday, all hospitality and leisure venues in England will be forced by law to close between 10pm and 5am.

That includes pubs, restaurants, cinemas, bingo halls, kebab shops and takeaways - which will be able to make deliveries but not have customers in the shop.

Pubs will be forced to close at 10pm sharp - meaning they must call last orders at around 9.30pm.

The new restrictions were announced by the Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the House of Commons this afternoon.

He said the Government will introduce new restrictions in England "carefully judged to achieve the maximum reduction in the R number with the minimum damage to lives and livelihoods".

He told MPs: "I want to stress that this is by no means a return to the full lockdown of March.

"We're not issuing a general instruction to stay at home.

"We will ensure that schools, colleges, universities stay open because nothing is more important than the education, health and well-being of our young people.

"We will ensure businesses can stay open in a Covid-compliant way. However we must take action to suppress the disease."
