Takeaway offering 'premium' products and 'fast service' to open in popular Nottingham bar

A new takeaway aiming to keep the 'spirit of Nottingham’s Robin Hood alive' will soon open inside a popular city centre bar. The 'Fryer Tuck' takeaway has been given the go ahead to operate out of Spankies, in Goldsmith Street, after plans were granted permission by Nottingham City Council.

A new takeaway can now set up in part of the bar facing Talbot Street, with a new service window and 'Fryer Tuck' signs. The applicant in the plans for the takeaway said he aimed to add to the city that he has "always loved" through the restaurant.

Council documents outlined the pub and other neighbouring late night venues nearby, such as people queuing for Rock City, meant activity levels are very high throughout the evening and early morning hours. They considered that as a result, the proposed use would not make the area any busier late at night.

During the planning process, Nottinghamshire Police requested information about security arrangements at the new takeaway. The applicant responded that there would be on-site security including CCTV and personnel, in addition to the external shutter.

A Nottingham City Council report added: "The proposed external alterations are limited and are contained within the existing arched opening on to Talbot Street. The proposed external shutter is able to be fixed within the soffit area behind the brick arch and, in the context of the existing opening, is not considered to materially affect the appearance or visual amenity of the street scene."

Applicant Ahmed Kasim, in a planning document, said: "I propose to operate a new takeaway from the above premises and this application for a new service window and signage facilitates the proposed takeaway use. I am a student at Nottingham Trent and have always loved Nottingham.

"It's a city of culture, nightlife, sport, and stories – one that's big on fun, and small on cost. It's friendly, it's exciting and has excellent transport links – the perfect place to embrace your independence. The love for small business and art has always kept me here and will keep me here after university.

"The site is located near a dilapidated burger van that has permanently closed. This was well located as it would stop club goers walking to the other side of town to get their food, instead they would buy their food close by to then get a taxi straight home.

"We propose to give the residents of Nottingham a more premium product, with better food and a faster service to get them on their way. We have chosen a name to keep the spirit of Nottingham’s Robin Hood well alive." Spankies was renamed in a nod to its much-loved much-loved predecessor when the venue was called Spanky Van Dyke's.

Spanky Van Dyke's closed after a party on New Year's Eve in 2017 after seven years. But the venue reopened as Albert's was then closed and the bar reopened as Spankies.
