Take advantage of what's still on offer in Lanarkshire during the summer holidays

With just over two weeks left of the summer holidays, there’s still time left to take full advantage of what’s on offer in South Lanarkshire.

There are a range of free or cheap options to keep kids occupied for the rest of the holidays.

South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture offer a wide selection of fun activities, and from summer club events to free swimming sessions, there’s something for everyone.

There are ACE (arts, culture, exercise) classes running until August 14 which are available to all children under 16. The summer camps offer a range of activities at numerous venues across Clydesdale, East Kilbride, Hamilton and Cambuslang and Rutherglen. For information on dates and events visit https://www.slleisureandculture.co.uk/news/article/3869/ace_summer. Courses must be pre-booked.

Low Parks Museum is holding a Book of the Dead event until August 5, which is suitable for children aged over seven. Youngsters attending the event, which costs £1.55, will be able to make their own book based on Egyptian history. The event will run each day at 10.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Limited spaces are available and should be booked in advance by calling Low Parks Museum on 01698 452382 or email aileen.meechan@southlanarkshireleisure.co.uk.

Locals can also take a tour of Hamilton Mausoleum, which is one of the town’s most famous buildings. Tours are on the first and third Sunday of each month and cost £5 or £3.50 for concessions. Tickets are available from Low Parks Museum reception, or contact lowparksmuseum@southlanarkshireleisure.co.uk or call 01698 452382 to arrange a tour.

Under-16s can take full advantage of the swimming facilities in the area, as free swimming sessions are available every Tuesday until August 12.

There are also a range of outdoor activities for when the weather is good. Parks include Biggar Park, Calderglen Country Park (which has it’s very own zoo), Chatelherault Country Park, James Hamilton Heritage Park and Strathaven Park.

A spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture (SLLC), said: “There are some free activities, plus our summer ACE programme is currently underway, which is competitively priced and discounted for those that are in receipt of qualifying benefits.

“A range of ACE activities are on offer until August 14, including summer camps, athletics, games sessions, arts and crafts sessions, musical instrument tuition to name just a few

“Although primarily aimed at adults, SLLC also has various ‘Festival of Fitness’ offers www.leisureoffers.co.uk/south-lanarkshire/festival-of-fitness-2022/ with free ACE passes available within the ‘VIP Taster Sessions & Offers’ section.

"This offer runs until August 14 and only applies to leisure centre sessions. In the ‘Headline Event’ section, there are also free ACE parties/activity sessions at Carluke Leisure Centre, Larkhall Leisure Centre and the Willie Waddell Sport and Community Centre.

“Local libraries are likely to be providing some free children’s activities and craft sessions that are programmed to support the Gadgeteers Summer Reading Challenge. These activities are aimed at primary school age children and must be booked in advance at the library, where more information is also available. The Libraries Service is also hosting a free Family Sports Day in Strathaven Park on August 6 from 11.30am.”
