Taiwan Earthquake Update: 29 Aftershocks Recorded Near Epicenter

Earthquake aftermath in Qinghai

Following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Hualien County in east Taiwan at 7:58 a.m. local time on Wednesday, there have been 29 aftershocks recorded near the epicenter, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Among these aftershocks, one registered above 6.0 on the Richter scale, while 13 were at or above 5.0, and the remaining 14 were above 4.0.

As recovery efforts continue in the region, the weather forecast for Hualien City, located near the epicenter, indicates increasing cloud coverage for tonight. Thursday is expected to have mostly cloudy skies with afternoon showers, followed by rain on Thursday night and throughout Friday.

Fortunately, rainfall totals are predicted to be relatively light for Taiwan, with models suggesting less than 25 mm (1 inch) of rain by Friday evening local time.

The seismic activity and subsequent aftershocks serve as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by residents and authorities in the aftermath of the earthquake. It is crucial for individuals in the affected areas to remain vigilant and prepared for any further developments.
