Taiwan's presidential office recently organized a unique 'tabletop' exercise involving various government agencies to simulate potential military escalations by China. This exercise, the first of its kind, aimed to test governmental responses to different scenarios in the event of heightened cross-strait tensions.

The simulation, overseen by Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, involved central and local government units as well as civil groups. President Lai emphasized the importance of verifying the preparedness of each government agency to respond to extreme situations, including both natural disasters and authoritarian expansionism.

China's claims over Taiwan as its territory have led to increased military activities in the region, with Chinese naval and coast guard vessels frequently operating in the Taiwan Strait and the Western Pacific. Recent large-scale military exercises conducted by China surrounding Taiwan have further escalated tensions.

Unlike traditional military war games, this tabletop exercise focused on testing how different government agencies could ensure the normal functioning of society during a crisis. The simulation included scenarios of high-intensity grey-zone warfare tactics and a situation where Taiwan was on the brink of conflict with China.

One key takeaway from the exercise was the need to enhance Taiwan's ability to combat disinformation during extraordinary times. The government plans to recruit and train 50,000 volunteers to assist in disaster relief efforts by the end of next year, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and resilience across society.

Overall, the tabletop exercise highlighted Taiwan's determination to strengthen its readiness and identify areas for improvement in the face of potential threats from an increasingly assertive Beijing.
