T In The Park's 'rise and fall' to be explored in new BBC Radio 1 podcast series

T In The Park was the festival to be at in the summer - beginning in 1994 and running for 22 years until 2016 - when the Strathallan Castle finally was silenced.

BBC Radio 1 have announced that they will be presenting a brand new podcast titled The Rise and Fall of T In The Park, transporting listeners back to the beginning of the iconic Scottish festival. Radio 1 DJ Arielle Free will hear from the people that were there living it - the artists, the vendors and the punters who made the annual pilgrimage to watch some of the biggest acts in the world.

The series will then delve into the decline of the festival, as Arielle asks the organisers and the team behind it to bust the myth on its ending and discover what happened to a festival that was believed would live on forever. Arielle Free says: “Like so many Scottish teens, I remember experiencing T In The Park and having an unforgettable weekend.

"I can’t wait to take Radio 1 listeners back to the heyday of the festival and relive its illustrious 22 years as I reveal behind-the-scenes secrets and uncover the real reason why T In The Park is no longer around.”

The first episode will delve into Glasgow’s stint as European City Of Culture in 1990 helped lay the groundwork for T In The Park. Featuring interviews with those on the scene and co-creators of T In The Park, this is a story of relaxed licensing laws, guitar bands, the underground rave scene, big ambitions and rampant optimism in the face of Scottish weather.

The next episode will then investigate the very first T In The Park, and how it also came close to being the last. Told by fans and festival organisers, this is a story of musical megastars, quirky camping and near-failure.

Listeners will hear how the organisers found a site for the festival, booked bands and had moral support from Michael Eavis - all to then lose cash, but win the hearts and minds of fans and critics alike.

The Rise And Fall Of T In The Park is produced by BBC Scotland for Radio 1. It iss available on BBC Sounds from 4 July 2022, with the next four episodes available on Monday 18 July.
