Syrian Tent City Reportedly Being Readied To Receive Hundreds Of Thousands Of Gazans

Two tent cities in Syria are reportedly being readied to receive thousands of Gazans as a result of efforts from Turkey and Qatar.

Citing Syrian sources, journalist Ariel Oseran, who works for Israeli outlet i24, detailed that the camps were originally built during the Syrian civil war and are located near the Turkish border.

Now, following the end of the war and as many Syrians return to their homes, the camps are being repurposed to take displaced Gazans. The journalist added that the effort could be part of a broader (but unverified) agreement that would see the U.S. recognize the new Syrian government and lift sanctions on Damascus.

President Donald Trump said earlier this year that Palestinians should leave Gaza because of the dire conditions: "You can't live in Gaza right now, you need another location," he said in February.

"If we could find the right piece of land, pieces of land, and build them some really nice places ... I think that would be a lot better than going back to Gaza," Trump added. Middle Eastern countries like Egypt have flatly rejected the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza.

Trump reiterated this week his desire for the U.S. to control Gaza, calling it an "incredible piece of important real estate" following a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Speaking to press, Trump said "you know how I feel" about the enclave, adding that "having a peace force like the U.S. there controlling and owning" it would be a "good thing." "You call it the Freedom Zone."

At another passage of the interaction with press, Trump was asked about the act that the Israel-Hamas war is still ongoing even though "many Palestinian-Americans voted for" him because he "promised them to end the war."

"The war will stop at some point that won't be in the too distant future," Trump said, without providing specifics. Talks continue to be stalled as Israel expands its ground offensive in Gaza after ending the ceasefire.

Earlier this month Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced a large expansion of the military operation, saying the army would seize "large areas" of Gaza. The Associated Press reported on Monday that Israel currently controls 50% of the strip as it doubled the size of a military buffer zone over the past weeks.
