In a written statement on Wednesday, Syrian rebel leader Mohammad al-Jolani, also known as Ahmad Al Sharaa, declared his intention to dissolve the security forces of the toppled regime of Bashar al-Assad. This announcement was made exclusively through his office.
Al-Jolani emphasized that the dissolution of the previous regime's security forces would include the closure of notorious prisons, marking a significant shift in the country's security apparatus.
Interim Government's Limited Duration
Meanwhile, Mohammad Al-Bashir, a Syrian rebel-linked government leader appointed as the country's prime minister, reiterated in an interview with Italian media that the interim government's tenure is temporary, set to last until March.
Al-Bashir outlined the priorities of the interim government, which include restoring security and state authority, repatriating millions of Syrian refugees, and ensuring the provision of essential services to the population.
Constitutional Framework and Future Direction
Responding to questions about Syria's new constitution, Al-Bashir indicated that the specifics, including the potential Islamic nature of the constitution, would be clarified during the constitution-making process.
The developments signal a pivotal moment in Syria's post-conflict landscape, with efforts underway to reshape the country's security infrastructure, governance framework, and societal dynamics.
