Intelligence officials in Syria's new de facto government successfully foiled a plan by the Islamic State group to detonate a bomb at a Shiite shrine in the Damascus suburb of Sayyida Zeinab, as reported by state media on Saturday. The State news agency SANA revealed that members of the IS cell behind the attack plot were apprehended, ensuring the safety of the shrine and its visitors.
Sayyida Zeinab has been a target for past attacks by IS militants due to their extreme views on Shiite Muslims. In a previous incident in 2023, a bomb-laden motorcycle exploded in the area, resulting in casualties just before the Shiite holy day of Ashoura.
The recent prevention of the attack serves as a reassurance to religious minorities in Syria, including those who were perceived as supporters of the former regime led by Bashar Assad. The country's new leadership, represented by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has emphasized the protection of all segments of society.
Furthermore, efforts to strengthen ties between Lebanon and Syria were highlighted during a meeting between Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister and HTS leader. Discussions included plans to establish a committee for border demarcation and combat smuggling activities along the shared frontier.
One contentious issue is the status of Chebaa Farms, an area controlled by Israel but claimed by both Lebanon and Syria. The lack of a clear demarcation of the border has complicated the situation, requiring diplomatic efforts to address the dispute.
While challenges remain, both parties expressed a commitment to resolving border-related issues and fostering social connections between their nations. The hope is to eliminate barriers that hinder cross-border interactions and promote cooperation for the benefit of both countries.
